Bold, glossy foliage that makes a statement even in the shadiest corner – Ligularia reniformis (often called the Tractor Seat Plant) is a fantastic option when you want instant “wow” and a lush, almost tropical feel.

Plant Description

Ligularia reniformis forms a clump of large, rounded, “tractor seat” leaves held on sturdy stems. The foliage is a rich deep green and looks amazing planted in groups or as a feature in a shady bed or large pot. In summer, tall stems carry sprays of bright yellow daisy-like flowers above the leaves, adding extra interest.

This is a great plant for adding structure, texture, and drama to sheltered, moist areas of the garden.

Key Features

  • Big, bold foliage – large glossy leaves that give a strong architectural look

  • Loves shade – ideal for part shade to full shade in a sheltered spot

  • Great for damp areas – thrives in consistently moist, rich soil

  • Summer flowers – tall stems of yellow daisy-like blooms

  • Perfect for pots – looks fantastic in a large container near an entrance or patio

  • Tropical feel – pairs well with hostas, ferns, hydrangeas and other lush, leafy plants

Growing Conditions

  • Position:
Best in part shade to full shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal. Avoid hot, harsh afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.

  • Soil:
Prefers rich, well-draining soil that stays consistently moist. Add compost or organic matter at planting time to improve structure and water-holding.

  • Watering:
Keep evenly moist, especially through the warmer months. Do not allow to dry out for long periods – the large leaves will flag quickly if the plant gets too dry.

  • Climate & Frost:
Generally hardy in most NZ gardens if planted in a sheltered spot. Protect from heavy frost when young and avoid very exposed, windy positions.

  • Feeding:
Apply a general slow-release fertiliser in spring, and top up with compost or organic mulch once or twice a year to keep it lush.

Planting & Care

  1. Choose a shady to semi-shaded spot with shelter from strong winds.

  2. Improve the soil with compost and/or well-rotted organic matter.

  3. Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and plant at the same depth it was in the pot.

  4. Water well after planting and keep evenly moist while it establishes.

  5. Mulch around the base (keeping mulch away from the stems) to help retain moisture.

  6. Remove spent flower stems and any damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy.

Snails & slugs:
Ligularia can be attractive to snails and slugs, especially when young and in damp conditions. Keep an eye out and manage as needed.

Landscaping Ideas

  • Plant in groups to create a bold, structural look under trees or along the shady side of a house.

  • Combine with ferns, hostas, heuchera, clivias or hydrangeas for a lush, layered shade garden.

  • Use in a large pot at an entrance or on a shaded patio for instant impact.

  • Ideal beside water features or in damp, shady borders where other plants may struggle.
