Overview

‘Fuyu’ is the gold-standard persimmon for Kiwi gardens — sweet, crunchy fruit you can eat firm like an apple, on a tidy, easy-care tree. A reliable cropper across much of the North Island and warmer South Island sites. 

Key Features

• Non-astringent: delicious when firm; softens to extra-sweet if left to ripen

• Self-fertile: no pollinator required

• Heavy cropping: mid–late autumn (approx. April–May)

• Compact habit: manageable size; great for home orchards

• Climate-suited: thrives in the Hamilton area and wider North Island; handles light frost once established

Growing Conditions

• Sun: Full sun (6+ hours)

• Soil: Free-draining, improved with compost

• Water: Consistent moisture in first 1–2 summers; deep, infrequent soaks

• Shelter: Protect from strong wind for best fruit set

Planting & Care

• Planting: Dig a wide hole, mix in compost; keep the graft above soil level

• Mulch: 5–8 cm organic mulch (keep clear of trunk)

• Feed: Fruit/citrus fertiliser late winter and mid-spring

• Prune: Light prune after harvest to maintain shape and renew fruiting wood

• Stake: Useful in windy spots for the first season
